On January 12, 2023, Dr. Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic delivered the Savio L-Y Woo Distinguished lecture at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Vunjak-Novakovic is University Professor, the first engineer to receive this highest academic rank at Columbia University. The focus of her lab is on engineering functional human tissues and organs for use in regenerative medicine and patient-specific “organs on a chip” models of disease.

As part of this lectureship, Dr. Vunjak Novakovic delivered two lectures. The first was titled “Life in an Academic Lab: Dreaming, Preserving and Trying to Make Difference”. Her second lecture was titled “Translational Studies of Engineered Human Tissues.

The Department of Bioengineering honored Dr. Woo by establishing the Savio L-Y. Woo Distinguished Lectureship in 2021.
