In a new study published in Nature Scientific Data, our MSRC alumni Dr. Alejandro Almarza and his research group at the University of Pittsburgh have developed a breakthrough tissue-clearing protocol called c-Clear. Combined with advanced high-speed microscopy, this innovation allows scientists to map complex neural pathways within dense joint tissue in pristine 3D clarity for the first time without destroying the tissue’s structure.

The massive 16-terabyte dataset from this project has been made completely open-source for global research on the NIH SPARC Portal. With this pipeline successfully validated, Dr. Almarza’s team is now turning their focus to the human jaw joint (TMJ) to help unravel the mysteries of chronic and debilitating pain.
